What If I Have No Disinfectant In An Emergency?
A life-threatening emergency is called an emergency for a reason. If you witness an emergency where bleeding is involved, the first step is always to STOP THE BLEED. If you don’t have some sort of disinfectant available in a time of crisis, don’t worry about it.
Two components.
First, if you don’t stop the bleed with whatever you have available, sanitary or not, emergency services won’t be able to save an expired victim.
Second, the sterilization processes a hospital takes will end up killing any bacteria should the patient be able to survive through the trauma.
Always focus on stopping the bleed by applying pressure with something you can find - if it’s not sterile gauze, it’s OK, emergencies are never ideal and neither will be the circumstances.
